What is the difference between coaching and counseling?
Counseling provides a safe, supportive space in which a person can explore past events and their impact on the present, patterns in thinking and behaviors that are roadblocks to living the life they want, and managing mental health concerns such as depression or anxiety. Counseling is primarily process-oriented, while coaching is goal-oriented.
Coaching focuses more specifically on the present and future, and helps a client achieve specific goals that they’re struggling to meet. Coaching focuses less on the “why” behind behaviors and more on the “how” a person can move toward the life they want. Think goal setting, identifying ways to overcome s barriers to those goals, and consistent accountability.
Who is a candidate for coaching?
The ideal coaching client is self motivated and interested in setting both short and long term goals that they want to achieve. Commitment to self and identified goals are qualities that will lead to greater success with a coach. Finally, a coaching client needs their mental health to be well-managed and in a place of stability. Coaching is NOT a replacement for counseling and coaching does not focus on mental health.
What are the benefits of choosing coaching?
Coaching is a great option for individuals who do not qualify for therapy, but still desire accountability and assistance in reaching their goals. Coaching can be as short or long term as you need it to be. Coaching can take place virtually or in person, or even in the community, as confidentiality guidelines are not dictated by HIPAA and thus can be agreed upon by the coach + client. Coaching can also cross state lines; while LPCs need to be licensed in each state in which they provide counseling, a coach is permitted to engage in coaching with individuals in any state, or even any country, allowing for consistency in meetings even while a person travels, vacations, or attends college classes out of state.
